Entrepreneurship in France, the firepower of crisis

Contrary to many views, the number of creations in 2020 represents a record year, with over 848,000 new companies registered against 815,000 in 2019, or 35,000 more which had already exceeded all forecasts. The 2021 barometer on the French’s entrepreneurial desire, produced by Opinionway, confirms that 2021 should not go ahead with the 21% of French people saying they want to build or take over a business. A third of them also say they have a well-crafted short-term project. So it will be around 7% of workers who have an entrepreneurship project ready to start within two years.

a wish that still remains

It must be said that successive imprisonments have prompted the French to take a fresh look at their future. It is also interesting to note that according to INSEE, the National CRA 2019 Observatory of Broadcasting VSEs/SMEs, the average age of business creators in 2020 was 36 and for business acquisitions was 45, so data that shows a rejuvenation in comparison until the 2000s.

figures in favor of growth

As per INSEE data October 2021, the total number of business creations of all types of businesses grew sharply (+6.7% after a decline of 1.9% in September, micro-entrepreneurs registrations are increasing (+8.1% After -3.7% ) and construction of traditional companies increased again (+4.4% after +1.4%). In the raw data, the total number of companies created in the last twelve months increased sharply (+21.0%), especially due to the low level of creations during the first imprisonment in 2020.
On October 9, 2021, the French Entrepreneurial Index (IEF), a national survey conducted by ifop on behalf of the Bpifrance Création Business Creation Observatory with 5,500 people representing the French population, measured entrepreneurial dynamics in France. The results of the 2021 edition highlight the fact that the French (30% of French people participating in the Entrepreneurship Chain) are not afraid to embark on the entrepreneurial path, irrespective of the health context. This survey shows that business building should not stop.

How is the entrepreneurial chain defined?

The Entrepreneurship Chain, 2021, includes those with intentions who create or plan to take up an activity, business leaders, but also leaders who have begun the process of building their business. Today it is 3 out of 10 people, static statistics, very revealing, which compared to 2018 show that entrepreneurial motivation is a reality in France. This becomes even more important as it is located in an extraordinary context that is a health crisis that does not provide a clear sky.
According to Nicolas Dufourc, CEO of BPIFrance, during the press conference on 9 December: “This survey shows that we must enlarge our action collectively to follow the structural trend of the French population which is moving towards entrepreneurship. It is certain that there will be more and more entrepreneurs in France and therefore there is a need for reinforced support to promote the sustainability and growth of these companies, which are a vector of value creation and the jobs of tomorrow. Bpifrance these issues to serve the future central to the strategy.

Creators who have refined their projects

Project leaders represent 11% of the population, compared to 7% in 2018, a far cry from forecasts that have been repeated over and over. So entrepreneurial dynamics are more and more established in the way we envision the future in France. Contrary to popular belief, project leaders believe the crisis has fueled them and even strengthened their entrepreneurial desire because, due to imprisonment, they have no access to their project. There was more opportunity to refine, think of new opportunities. In contrast, intentional people have become more cautious (9% of French people in 2021 and 14% in 2016).

more committed business leaders

Three-quarters of business leaders are believed to admit being affected by the pandemic, their attendance has not decreased since 2018. Instead of being overwhelmed by circumstances, 1 in 5 business leaders used a health crisis to reflect on their outlook. The company, to change its strategy, or to offer new products and services and therefore use them as a springboard or rebound. The strong resilience of entrepreneurs in terms of health is evident: the proportion of former business leaders (14%) who sold or closed their businesses has not increased since 2018.
